Where to Find an Authentic French Bakery in Austin

When people think of French pastries, they often picture buttery croissants, colorful macarons, elegant cakes, and beautiful pastry displays. But what actually makes a bakery authentically French?

As a French pastry chef who trained in France before opening Violette Bakehouse in Austin, this is a question I hear often.

The answer isn't just about the recipes—it's about the philosophy behind every pastry.

Authentic French Baking Starts with Technique

French pastry isn't designed to be the biggest or the sweetest dessert in the room. Instead, it focuses on balance, precision, and quality.

A croissant should be light, flaky, and buttery—not heavy or doughy.

A macaron should have a delicate shell, a soft interior, and a filling that complements the almond flavor instead of overpowering it.

Every layer, every texture, and every ingredient has a purpose.

Everything Is Made from Scratch

At Violette Bakehouse, we prepare our pastries the traditional way.

That means:

  • Laminating croissant dough by hand.

  • Baking fresh throughout the week.

  • Making fillings, creams, and mousses from scratch.

  • Using real butter and quality ingredients.

  • Choosing local ingredients whenever possible—including fresh seasonal fruit from nearby farms.

Taking shortcuts might save time, but it would change the final product. We believe great pastries are worth the extra effort.

Bringing a Little Piece of France to Austin

Moving from France to Texas gave me the opportunity to share the pastries I grew up loving with a new community.

Some customers visit because they lived in France and miss authentic pastries.

Others are trying a real French croissant or macaron for the very first time.

Watching someone take that first bite and smile never gets old.

More Than Croissants

While croissants are often the first thing people notice, French pastry has so much more to offer.

You'll also find:

  • Elegant entremets

  • Fresh fruit tartlets

  • Éclairs

  • Cheesecakes with a French touch

  • Handmade macarons

  • Seasonal specialties inspired by what's fresh

Every dessert is made with the same attention to detail, whether it's a simple pastry for breakfast or a custom cake for a special celebration.
